Workshops (approximately 2-3 hrs. each) are facilitated by the  LeXMizzou project team.

The project plan calls for 5 workshops which you will need to attend. All activities are geared towards supporting your game concept design and development through feedback and testing of your game. We have now scheduled the days and times for all of the workshops.

Workshop Schedule

All events are scheduled on Fridays and will occur in Townsend Hall, Room 205.

  • August 25th: 1:00 – 3:00 pm 
  • September 8th: 1:00 – 3:00 pm
  • October 27th, 1:00 – 3:00 pm
  • November 17th, 1:00 – 3:00 pm
  • December 8th, 12:00-5:00 pm (Game Day!!) 

Workshop 1 (August 25th) is dedicated to helping student groups clarify their project ideas and to help them focus on both the game and the learning aspect. The students will present their first ideas and receive feedback but also give feedback to their peers. Students will begin the design process by writing the story boards.  Members of the LeXMizzou leadership team will be present and help as facilitators and gaming experts. In addition, Carmen Schafer, Business Technology Analyst of ACT will provide an introduction to accessibility.

Workshop 2 (September 8th) focuses how to transform the story boards into the game platform app. We will have a 2-hour workshop introducing the game platform. The students start working with the editor to develop the game.

Workshop 3 (October 27th) brings all student groups together again. Groups present their first digital version, and the problems they have, receive feedback on the first versions and how to solve technical problems, if any, and how to improve the game. The teams are introduced to usability and accessibility studies and students make a plan of how and when to conduct the usability and accessibility studies. Each team shall be asked to write brief written reports regarding usability and accessibility issues that they encounter and address.

Online Workshop 4 (November 17th) is a week long exchange between groups online within our project management platform, Slack. Between November 13th and 17th on Slack, Student groups will present and discuss their usability and accessibility results as well as any issues they are trying to overcome. Teams will review each others projects and provide feedback which can be used to improve them. We will provide details for the review process in the near future. For those who wish to meet to discuss this in person, we have reserved Townsend Room 205 on Friday, November 17th from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.

Workshop 5: Game Day Event (December 8th) is not a traditional workshop but rather a public event called Mizzou Game Day event where the audience and other players have the chance to play the games and give feedback. On this day, we will award two prizes to the best games: a People’s Choice and an Expert Choice award. This event will occur between 12:00 and 5:00 pm in Townsend Hall Room 205 on December 8th. 

In-between the workshops students will work in their groups both in person and on Slack to develop their game based learning expeditions. The IE Lab personnel in London Hall and the GRA are consistently available contacts for the students to get support in technical and other challenges.

Bringing the game pieces together. The project team, or a student group, brings all the different pieces of the game together in their game platform. In the end, there is one portal (e.g., where a user can access all the student produced games for learning.
